Mount Pacaya began erupting yesterday, spewing volcanic rock and debris over parts of the capital, Guatemala City, located just 20 miles to the north. So far, one death is attributed to the volcano, and three children are also missing.
President Álvaro Colom has declared a state of emergency and ordered the evacuation of surrounding areas. At least 1600 residents of nearby towns have fled.
Pacaya last erupted in 2000. In January of this year a 6.0 earthquake also hit southwest of Guatemala City.
While Colom appears in control, Guatemala is not on strong footing to respond to natural disasters. Government authority is weak throughout the country, criminal elements operate in daylight and with utter disregard for authorities, and drug-related violence has made the murder rate higher now than during Guatemala’s prolonged civil war.
